Practical information - CryoStore Training School
Training school for PhD students on conservation biology, wildlife management and genetic resource banking
4-11 July 2026 | Wageningen, the Netherlands
The training school is dedicated to the scientific training of PhD students that are interested in conservation biology, wildlife management, genetic resource banking and biosecurity, including the importance of conserving farm animal biodiversity. The 7-day event will mix theoretical lectures with practical work, excursions and field trips.
Here are some practical information that might be useful when planning your trip to Wageningen.
How to get to Wageningen
From the Netherlands
You can either travel by bus, car - your own car or Greenwheels - or take the train. If you want to plan your trip - something we'd really recommend you to do - you can find information on the NS-website for trains or the 9292-website for buses.
From outside of the Netherlands
1. Rotterdam The Hague Airport
Rotterdam The Hague Airport is a minor international airport serving Rotterdam, the Netherlands’ second largest city, and The Hague. From the airport you can take the bus (bus line 33) to Rotterdam Central, which takes approximately 25 minutes. Note: unfortunately, you can’t buy a bus ticket from the bus driver. You can download the OVpay-app to pay for your bus ticket. More information about how OVpay works can be found on the OVpay-website. From Rotterdam Central you can take the train to Ede-Wageningen. Note: there is no direct route, so you'll have to travel via several different train stations. You can plan your route via the NS-website. You can either use an OV-chipcard or use your debit card to pay for the journey. More information about paying for your journey and how to check in and out can be found on the NS-website.
We understand that all this might seem a bit overwhelming at first, but don’t worry, if you get stuck at any point during your travels there are information booths at the airport and at the train stations where there are people who can help you on your way.
2. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the main international airport of the Netherlands. What’s great about this airport is that there’s a train station directly underneath the passenger terminal complex. How easy is that?! From here, you can take the train to Ede-Wageningen. Note: there is no direct route, so you’ll have to travel via several different train stations. You can plan your route via the NS-website.
3. Eindhoven Airport
Next to the terminal (located in P1) you will find the bus stop where you can get on and off. You can take bus 400 and 401 (Bravo Bus) to Eindhoven Central station. From there you can take the train to Ede-Wageningen. You can plan your route via the NS-website.
Transportation during the summer school
In the Netherlands, a bike is the best way to get from A to B - for relatively short distances, that is. We Duthies LOVE riding our bikes, and we're willing to bet that by the end of the week you'll have fallen in love with cycling as well. If you don't have access to a bike, we've provided a list with companies where you can rent a bike for the week (see below). Note: make sure that you always lock your bike so nobody can steal it.

How to get to the Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands
Most of the programme activities of the summer school will take place on Wageningen Campus, which is where most of the Wageningen University & Research buildings are located. The building where CGN is located is Radix, which is building nr 107. The entrance of the Radix building is indicated with the orange arrow. You can just enter via the sliding doors and report at the front desk.
Note: on the first day you will receive a visitor’s pass that will allow you to enter the building.

If you are coming from the city centre, you can take either bus line 103 or 303. Both bus lines will bring you straight to Wageningen Campus. Travel time is approximately 15 minutes. Make sure you get off at bus stop 'Campus/Omnia, Wageningen'.
How to get to Hoekelum farm
The visit to Hoekelum farm is scheduled for Saturday 4 July. If you prefer not to travel to Hoekelum by bike, you can use public transport. The address of the farm is Edeseweg 122, 6721 KE, Bennekom. If you're coming from Wageningen Campus, you can take the bus (bus line 303) from 'Campus/Omnia' to bus stop 'Ede, Horalaan'. From there it's a 15-minute walk to Hoekelum farm.
If you're coming from a different location, you can plan your route via the 9292-website (something we really recommend you do, as there might be last-minute changes to the bus schedule during the holiday period).
Weather in the Netherlands
The weather in the Netherlands in the summer is very unpredictable. Usually, it's is quite nice and not too hot. At the beginning of July you can expect an average temperature of 19 degrees Celsius. However, the temperature is very variable, so make sure to pack both t-shirts for sunny days and sweaters for when the temperature drops. And maybe also pack an umbrella just in case.
