PhD 1

Validation of improved protocols for the vitrification of teleost gonadal tissue

Location: Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Norway

Main Supervisor: Prof. Ian Mayer, E-mail: Ian.Mayer@nmbu.no

Participating researchers: Dr. Martin Pšenička (USB), Dr. Jaana Peippo (NordGen)

Objectives:

  1. Develop and validate a method for the vitrification of gonadal tissue from teleost species

  2. Validate recovery success of frozen/thawed fragments in vitro

  3. Application of laser cryotome to visualize and characterize freeze-thaw damage in gonadal tissue

Expected Results:

  1. Establish vitrification protocols for the successful cryopreservation of gonadal tissue.

  2. Confirm viability of germ cells/primary oocytes harvested from cryopreserved ovarian fragments.

Planned secondments:  (Host, Supervisor, timing, length, and purpose)

  1. JU (USB), Pšenička, M10, 1 M, vitrification of fish ovarian tissue

  2. INIAV, Pereira, M14, 3 M, vitrification of bovine ovarian tissue

  3. LLS Rowiak, Stolze, M22, 1 M, application of laser microscopy for the visualization of freeze-thaw damage in ovarian tissue

  4. SCBI, Comizzoli, M30, 1 M, learning advanced cryotechnology, including novel methods for ovarian tissue cryopreservation.
